Seagate Launches Self-healing Storage Technology

Self-healing storage technology

Key Highlights

  • Seagate has enhanced its Exos Application Platform storage arrays with a new ASIC RAID controller that boosts performance.
  • The Exos X chassis can carry a mix of traditional hard disks and SSDs.
  • It comes with software that moves “hot” data automatically, often accessed, to SSDs, while less “cold” data is transferred to the hard drives.

Three Exos X products are defined by their size and drive-bay count. It has all the standard connections such as SAS, network attached SAS, Fibre Channel up to 32G, iSCSI up to 25G, and a 10GBASE-T option.

What Is Seagate’s ADAPT Technology?

The new systems utilize ADAPT (Autonomic Distributed Allocation Protection Technology) erasure coding technology of Seagate, which minimizes data-redundancy overhead and system rebuilds from data loss or drive failure.

A new self-healing storage technology, Automatic Drive Regeneration (ADR), is paired with ADAPT. If a read/ write head of the hard drive fails, ADR takes the failed charge out of commission but leaves the remaining drive heads operational. ADAPT rebuilds the data from the dead platter elsewhere.

Tom DiMauro Explains About ADR – Self-healing Storage Technology

Tom DiMauro, product manager for storage systems at Seagate, said that if a single head is taken out, one might come back with 90% of that capacity after the ADR action is finished. Then, they add that drive back into the pool seamlessly in the background so the data is rebalanced when the operation is complete.

He agrees that some people will be suspicious of leaving a broken hard disk deployed in a storage array. But, he says this is the first version of this technology and will become a basic TCO value proposition when hard drives reach 30TB and beyond in the next several years. Those drives have up to 10 platters, and nine still in use is room for a lot of data.

He also said that the ability to self-heal a device and keep the vast majority of that capacity in play makes for much more efficient storage systems. Not to mention just the power of administrators not to worry about changing out drives as frequently as they do in their data centers.

Backblaze Enhances Cloud Storage Reserve Pricing

Backblaze

Key Highlights

  • Cloud storage provider Backblaze has majorly enhanced its channel program with the ability to reserve capacity in advance to ease sales of partners, along with a promise to not charge any fees beyond the capacity cost used by its channel customers.
  • Nilay Patel, Vice President of sales and partners of Backblaze, said that the changes to the channel program also include a new partner portal to let partners register deals and better track the results of that registration further.

Backblaze has grown from a focus on offering direct cloud-based data protection for individuals to working with small businesses to enterprises. It made the channel a central part of its strategy during the process.

He said they are backing up over a half-million customers in 70 countries and are managing about three exabytes of capacity. Backblaze is easy to use, affordable, and S3-compatible. Backblaze wants to make it even easier to use and affordable with the changes it makes to its channel program.

The first major change is an update to Backblaze B2 Reserve. The company unveiled a pricing package in April that gives its channel partners the ability to buy storage capacity predictably rather than based on strict consumption.

With Backblaze B2 Reserve, channel partners can commit to capacity purchases up-front with a discount and then offer them to customers as part of a package of services with predictable pricing.

Backblaze B2 Reserve drives cloud storage 100 percent predictable. There are no hidden fees. Usually, the fees for egress, retention, retrieval, or transactions can cost two to eight times what customers anticipate. Now they have eliminated all those fees, so customers pay no more than the storage capacity they buy.

The Backblaze B2 Reserve program permits channel partners to set up a budget for what they pay for cloud storage over time while allowing it to pay for what they require.

BlueXP

Key Highlights

  • NetApp, a storage and cloud optimization technology developer, is making a full-court press in the hybrid cloud and multi-cloud market with the introduction of BlueXP.
  • BlueXP is a new unified control plane to manage storage and data services across on-premises, private, and public cloud environments.

Ronen Schwartz, senior vice president, and general manager of cloud storage for the San Jose, California-based company, said that BlueXP is the first technology to allow a user to configure storage and data services from on-premises to private and public clouds with a single user interface.

He said that BlueXP makes all data storage available in a single place, and it impacts all users of NetApp, whether on-premises or in the cloud, making them much more efficient. BlueXP is a significant move for NetApp.

Schwartz said that NetApp had done a lot of things first. They have a record of innovation, including being the first to bring on-premises storage to AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. It is not just bringing data to the cloud but making it cloud-native.

Now, customers have an evolved cloud stack, which Schwartz said includes an on-premises data estate that is still growing and a cloud-based data estate growing faster.

He said it is not a single cloud but multiple clouds. It gives businesses agility and savings, but it is harder to drive efficiency and scale across multiple systems. With BlueXP, they get a single view across all these systems.

He said that BlueXP would allow various roles to be assigned to separate users so customers can create views by the tenant and set the services by the tenant. It also offers a framework for service providers.

BlueXP addresses many services, including ransomware protection and data security across all NetApp-focused systems.

For NetApp channel partners, BlueXP allows them to help customers take advantage of their broader view of their on-premises and cloud environments and optimize for data protection or cost.

It helps partners evaluate and optimize the value of customer installations8. Partners have the opportunity to make major inputs on customer value with BlueXP.

Key Highlights

  • Google announced that it is making the new Gmail interface the standard user experience.
  • The company initially released the new interface but allowed users to revert to the original view.
  • Users will no longer have the option to go back to the old interface from November 2022.

Google started testing the update with Gmail users starting from Feb 2022. The company began making the redesigned Gmail available to users more widely, but with one significant difference. Users could switch back to the old design of Gmail if they did not like the revamped look.

Google Executives Noticed ‘Incognito Mode’ Failed To Protect Privacy

Google had said that the revamped platform would include a more unified design consisting of the company’s chat and video conferencing platform, Google Chat and Google Meet, all within Gmail’s interface.

Google mentions that the ability to customize the new interface makes it easier to stay on top of what is essential and decreases the requirement to switch between various applications, windows, or tabs. It is worth noting that with this new change, users will no longer have the option to configure Chat on the right side of Gmail.

The company’s decision to make its new user interface the standard experience is not surprising, but it will likely be a frustrating change for users who prefer the old design.

What Is New In Gmail?

Gmail users will have to configure which platforms they want to see on the left side of the window with the revamped look. Users can pick from Google Chat, Spaces, and Meet.

Google says that Gmail users can use the quick settings available in Gmail to customize the new interface to include the more important apps. Users can use Gmail by or a combination of Gmail, Chat, Spaces, and Meet.

When Will The Revamped Gmail Be Available To Users?

Google said that it has started rolling out the update to all its users worldwide and that it should be available to everyone in the coming weeks.

Monthly Global Semiconductor Sales Decrease As Chip Market Takes Another Hit

global semiconductor sales

Key Highlights

  • According to statistics released by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), global semiconductor sales dropped 0.5% in September every month and down 3% compared to September 2021.
  • According to the SIA’s report, September chip buying in the Americas region increased by 11.5% compared to the same month in 2021, to a total of just over $12 billion, and upticks to $4.53 billion and $4.05 billion, respectively, were seen in Europe and Japan.
  • However, those gains were more than offset by the mainland Chinese market falling by 14.4% to $14.43 billion in the same time frame and a 7.7% decline to $11.97 billion in all other markets.

According to a statement issued by SIA president and CEO John Neuffer, the decline on the global semiconductor sales is the first year-on-year slowdown since January 2020. He said that the long-term market outlook remains strong as semiconductors continue to become a more significant and critical part of the digital economy.

Several indicators of a short-term decline for the world’s silicon makers exist, including the latest Intel earnings news that saw the third-quarter revenue of the company drop 20% on a year-on-year basis.

Net income for the US-based chipmaker dropped rapidly from $6.8 billion in the third quarter of 2021 to $1 billion in the most recent report, a drop of 85%.

Spend Management Startup Pleo Lays Off Nearly 15% Of Its Employees

The chip industry is seeing structural upheavals caused by shifting US trade policy toward China, supply chain disruptions caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and a prevailing view that the global economy is made for a recession, which has blunted demand.

A study unveiled earlier this month by MIT and published in the Harvard Business Review highlighted that the “vast majority” of chip manufacturing occurs in Taiwan, the People’s Republic of China, and South Korea.

The latest trade restrictions, enacted by the US Commerce Department earlier this month, are likely to cause significant problems for the Chinese domestic silicon industry, most prominently in the area of advanced chips. Experts agree that current silicon supplies have outstripped demand, even as individual markets, such as the automotive sector, struggle with continuing shortages.

Key Highlights

  • Danish spend management startup Pleo has announced that it plans to lay off nearly 15% of its workforce.
  • As the company has around 1,000 employees currently, it could affect up to 150 people.
  • Pleo develops the spend management tools for SMBs across Europe.

In a blog post, the co-founder and CEO Jeppe Rindom wrote that Pleo, at the point of almost 1,000 employees and with their focus across 16 different countries, feels so much other than just 12 months ago.

He added that the world has changed, and their next chapter will look different. They no longer operate under a ‘growth first’ mandate but rather a reality of ‘growth through focus and efficiency.

Pleo raised $150 million in July 2021 and another $200 million in December 2021. The company reached a $4.7 billion valuation following this Series C round. It became one of the most valued fintech companies in Europe.

Everyone has played an instrumental role in making Pleo reach this level. Rindom wrote that they have made their priorities and set their strategy for the coming year. And sadly, this is impacting 15% of their roles, and up to 150 of their colleagues may have to leave.

Pleo grew at a rapid pace. In 2021, the company had 20K customers across six countries: Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Ireland, and the UK. Now, the company runs in 16 different countries. Pleo competes with Spendesk and Payhawk.

The startup gives company cards with individual and team spending limits. Employees can attach the expense receipt in He directly when they buy something. The platform also supports out-of-pocket expenses if you pay in cash and get reimbursed later.

He finally syncs expenses with accounting tools like Sage, Xero, and Quickbooks. The company also provides an invoice management product to replace the existing accounts payable solution. The idea is that Pleo can help users automate many processes that come with spending the company’s money.

Hybrid Working Fails? 7 Challenges Of Hybrid Work

Though Pleo may have grown too quickly, raising more money at the same valuation will take a lot of work. He has a longer runway, but a few employees will have to leave the company.

Cloud Computing Is Reinventing Cars And Trucks

0
Cloud

Key Highlights

  • Automobiles are becoming the main concentration of technology providers, including cloud providers.
  • Most auto manufacturers are moving in the same direction, offering a wholly connected, software-defined product, albeit some more slowly than others.

Cars have become defined highly by computer automation and less by horsepower or wheelbase. These days, most performance enhancements are made at the software level. Significant modifications that need mechanical changes are mostly a thing of the past.

How Will Enterprises Benefit From These Innovations?

Cars will be primarily distinguished by the cloud computing services that support them. For instance, Apple Car Play was a convenient service offering another way to use iPhone to play podcasts or use voice response for text messages. Now, these systems monitor driving systems, improve performance, and deal with safety issues.

The core system that defines the car will be much like the operating system that defines the cell phone. Instead of decoupled systems interacting to create a driving experience, unified systems will operate within a typical operating environment.

The back end of the system will connect with cloud providers to do the more advanced “off-car processing,” like scrutinising data from car sensors to determine if a maintenance event is likely to happen soon, using AI and petabytes of learning data to make that call.

It could even notice that the driving behaviors have changed, indicating that some health issues may need attention.

The key is that the car will become an edge computer, with lighter-weight processing occurring on board related to the vehicle’s safe operation. The more impressive stuff will occur on the back-end cloud providers that house vast amounts of data and process-intensive AI and analytics systems.

The advantage for enterprises will be self-driving trucks that can carry loads over long distances and become part of a more anticipated and reliable supply chain. Moreover, maintenance and fuel costs should drop; even trucks driven by humans should offer superior safety, efficiency, and comfort.

Why Companies Are Moving To Database Virtualization Amid Market Uncertainty

0
Database Virtualization

Key Highlights

  • With IT facing increased pressure to migrate legacy systems to the cloud, database virtualization (DBV) is a valuable tool.
  • A recent Fortune survey found that more than 80 percent of CEOs are preparing for an impending recession.
  • Although the shape and depth of this downturn are still subject to discussion, several large enterprises have already shifted into high gear to reduce costs wherever they can.

IT leaders are currently tasked with reining their data infrastructure’s cost. Cloud databases offer an excellent opportunity to move to a more scalable and flexible model that can react rapidly to market demands and result in cost savings when the economy contracts. The cloud also helps an enterprise ensure it is ready to scale sooner when markets recover.

Hybrid Working Fails? 7 Challenges Of Hybrid Work

Though there is a reason why migrations are considered the bane of the industry, moving business users and their workloads to the cloud is challenging, it might be one of the most challenging problems in all of Information Technology.

Database virtualization (DBV) is a powerful catalyst that lets IT move between database stacks and introduce new technology. It also enables them to shed legacy systems that are turning into organizational liability.

A Database virtualization (DBV) platform sits in the data path and translates SQL & API calls in real time. To put it in a simple way, with DBV, applications written for one database can run directly using a different database without a costly, drawn-out, and highly risk-laden migration.

For future data projects, Database virtualization (DBV) can act as both tactical “pain relief” and a strategic enabler. It can accelerate database migrations, optimize workloads, and consolidate database stacks.

With DBV, IT can solve both the challenges of consolidating and reducing costs while setting itself up for growth and expansion during the market recovery.
