Key Highlights
- Now we can measure food spoilage with a mobile phone.
- GoMicro has developed a Spotcheck App and a phone attachable magnifier that can accurately assess the level of spoilage or ripeness of food.
There has been a question regarding food wastage for many years. Can any gadget that is inbuilt in mobile become a pivotal device to help us solve the $1 trillion food waste problem?
Dr. Sivam Krish, GoMicro CEO and Founder, says the reply to the question is YES. He noted that the Spotcheck App of GoMicro and an attachable phone magnifier are designed to assess the spoilage or ripeness of fresh food.
On 13th July, at the 400M Agri-Food Innovation Forum in Toowoomba, Queensland, he showed evidence of GoMicro’s Spotcheck device that effectively read the accuracy of food spoilage.
With greater accuracy through a superior imaging system and AI app, Dr. Krish believes the innovation of GoMicro could save our agricultural industries a massive sum of money.
Accuracy Levels of The Device
He also mentioned that we could assess the spoilage or ripeness of fruits and veggies with a 86-99% accuracy, measured in days. It is a highly topical issue for the food industry to address, with an estimated 30% of the food being spoiled.
We can see that there are some powerful commercial opportunities for a cheap and portable device to have the power to make accurate food spoilage assessments.
Krish explains that the team took 100 images of an array of various veggies every day to collect training images to build the AI app. But, they could not achieve high accuracy in field conditions as AI needs thousands of photos for training.
About GoMicro
GoMicro is a microscopy 4.0 company based at Flinders University’s New Venture Institute that was established in 2020 as an EdTech company and has grown to be an AgTech company. It won the Bayer Grants4Ag competition leading to an ongoing relationship with Bayer Crop Sciences. It also won second prize in the 2021 Rocket Speeder FOOD WASTE + LOSS Accelerator Program pitch competition.
GoMicro’s aim of re-inventing the microscope and instilling it with artificial intelligence is designed to make the highest quality technology accessible to the public, not just scientists.
The company’s patent-pending technology creates lab-quality imaging conditions that significantly increase detection accuracy, reducing the number of images needed for training and resulting in the most accurate AI detection available at this magnification level.
GoMicro has placed its primary focus on agriculture to assist farmers, and agronomists detect pests and leaf disease & in assessing food quality accurately.
Dr. Krish said that any farmer with a mobile device would have the diagnostic capability of an agronomist with the help of a more accurate AI engine into the Spotcheck microscope added to the device.
“It is an important breakthrough, because microscopic information can provide a vast array of information across a wide range of agricultural issues. More importantly we will be making it possible for anyone to build and deploy accurate AI applications.”
