Qualcomm will become the official chip supplier of Meta after the pair struck a multi-year agreement.
The agreement announced at the recent IFA conference in Berlin will cover chips for metaverse-related applications, including VR platforms for the Quest hardware. It is an effective extension of the work done by both companies together.
The consumer-level VR headsets of Meta, previously sold under the Oculus brand name, already use Qualcomm processors. The latest Quest headset uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 chipset.
Meta has previously worked with Intel, also. However, there was a suggestion Meta was looking to go it alone after using its own custom-built machine learning chips in-house. As a result, it would align with Google, which previously built its AI and quantum chips.
An announcement says that the news of the deal with Qualcomm signals a commitment to the chipmaker as the agreement is set to deliver multiple generations of premium devices and experiences powered by custom virtual reality platforms in the years to come.
Mark Zuckerberg and Cristiano Amon broke the news during an IFA keynote, with the latter suggesting the agreement would revolutionize the future of computing for billions of people in the coming years.
Amon said that this agreement would allow their companies to deliver best-in-class devices and experiences to transform how they work, learn, plan, create and connect in a fully realized metaverse. Zuckerberg said in his remarks that the chips would power technology in the future roadmap of Quest products. In July, he revealed a handful of unfinished prototype headsets, with the company seeking to increase VR headsets fidelity.
Meta plans to release a new virtual reality (VR) headset this winter.
